 Mercie sent the plaster model of David Vainqueur from Rome to the Paris Salon and won 
the First Class Medal and the Cross of the Legion of Honour - a unique achievement.
The state commissioned a bronze version of the statue in 1872 which was placed in the
Musee de Luxembourg.
