About us

Garret and Hurst Sculpture

Garret and Hurst is a family-run company that has specialised in 19th century sculpture since 1992. The company was founded by Margaret Cowley and Wendy Grellman who decided to concentrate exclusively on their first love - sculpture - after some years of trading as general antique dealers. They were joined by Margaret's son, Peter, in 2003.

We are based in Sussex and exhibit at major Fine Art and Antiques fairs throughout the UK, including the BADA, LAPADA and London Olympia fairs.

We pride ourselves on reflecting the art of 19th sculpture in our acquisition of signed figurative and animalier pieces of the highest quality by the master sculptors who exhibited at the Paris Salons. The difference between high quality 19th century casts and those later casts and imitations, often of poorer quality, that make up 20th century production make it important to discriminate between the two. This is the role that Garret & Hurst fulfils and as leading specialists in the field we are working to promote the increasing knowledge of and interest in sculpture from this fascinating period.

Since 2012 we have represented a select number of contemporary sculptors, chosen for their technical abilities and artistic skill.

Buying from us

We specialise in fine early examples of ninteenth century work, sculpted and cast within the artist's lifetime with original patination, unless otherwise stated. In some instances where minor restoration has been carried out full details will be noted on item description and invoice.

We are also the sole representatives of contemporary sculptors Margot Homan and Robert Glen, whose work is cast by the Mariani Art Foundry of Tuscany. Each sculpture bears the signature of the artist, an edition number of no more than 10 and the foundry stamp.

As members of The British Antique Dealers Assocation, BADA, as well as LAPADA Garret & Hurst abide by a strict Code of Practice. All artworks are now available with a BADA Certificate of Provenance guaranteeing their authenticity. A description and condition report is also available with each sculpture.

We are happy to quote for door to door delivery through recognised professional freight carriers who have a fully insured service against loss, theft or damage during transport. We can also offer the facility of payment by Mastercard or Visa.

Please contact us for prices of individual items, which will be adjusted depending on whether the piece is for export and/or delivery costs.
